if a married person buys a second piece of property,while living outside the jointly owned marital home, in there name only, does that property become part of the marital estate?

The short answer is yes, all property owned by the parties is part of the marital estate. How a court would treat the second home, or the equity in it, depends on a number of factors. If you are considering divorce, speak to an attorney.
