Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Michigan

unpaid medicaid bill

My best friends boyfriend of 20 years,3 kids, is in jail for a 17 year old hospital bill from the birth of one of the children while she was on medicaid. He has lived with and supported his kids and still does! He has to have $3800 to get out and does not have it. Any advice? My friend works but not enough to pay fot the house and all the bills on her own and is really freaking out.

People don't just go to jail for a bill. To get to the point one would get arrested, one would have to ignore the fact they were subpoena'd to go into court. With that said it sounds like a body attachment was entered, and often times at the bond return hearing the judge will release the debtor if they do not have the money to pay. It's rare that the bond amount would be set that high as well.
