Legal Question in Personal Injury in Texas

I was falsely accused of shoplifting and was given a citation by the police today. I do not have a record and have never been accused of this in my life. The police told me that I have 21 days to get my court date; the citation information in not yet in their system. Since this is my first offense and I am innocent and plan on pleading not guilty, will I need to get a lawyer when I go to court? What class is this offense considered? Can I file deferred adjudication or dispostion. Will this offense be on my record and if so, can it be expunged? Any additional advice would be greatly appreciated.

You'll be much better off with a lawyer.

Forget about deferred adjudication; you're innocent, and you should settle for nothing less than 100% exoneration. Insist on it. Demand a jury trial. Stick to your guns.
