What exactly is at-will employment?

Basically, it means that the employment may be terminated or modified at anytime, as long as the reason for the termination or change is not in violation of the employee's civil rights. In contrast to an at-will employee is an employee who has an employment contract for a length of time, like a professional basketball player.
