Legal Question in Employment Law in Illinois

I recently resigned from a job (whose home office is in Georgia) without giving a proper two-week notice. When I asked to cash in the 50+ hours of vacation time I had accrued, my request was denied because of my failure to give notice. According to the company, this rule is in the employee handbook I was given when hired but I simply can't convince myself of the legality of it.

Is it standard practice to withhold vacation time credit?
