Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Illinois

Aparmtent charges tenant 1 year of gas utilities without sending bill

Hi, I live in a large apartment complex in Dupage Cty in Illinois. The Apartment complex had me(tenant)sign an addendum to our lease saying we would start paying our own gas bill. Fine, however we kept asking when we would start getting billed and they would just say in a few months. They had to change the way our aparments were billed with the gas company. After a few months of this, we quit asking and never got a bill. We signed the addendum in Dec05. We just received notice from the complex that our aparmtent never got sent to the gas billing company when others did and now we owe 12 months of gas bills! Should we pay this? They say that since we signed we have to. They are willing to make 6 months payment arrangements. I don't think we should be held liable for these charges. Please help ASAP! They want our first payment tomorrow!

Hello and Happy New Year. In my opinion, you are not obligated to pay

12 months of gas bills. That is silly and very unfair. First of all

this addendum is not enforceable if it did not clearly specify a start date. You need representation to fight this, in my opinion. You should act quickly and carefully. I will be happy to discuss this matter with you further and in more detail.
