Legal Question in Medical Malpractice in Illinois

2nd Surgery; Pain, Suffering, and Lost Wage Calculation

I had an accident which required immediate emergency surgery. There were several errors and omissions associated with the 1st surgery. I ended up having a 2nd surgery 10 days later to correct the work of the 1st surgeon. If I had not had the 2nd corrective surgery, I would have been handicapped for life. Currently, I am working with the surgeon's insurance to get my medical bills for both surgeries taken care of. I would also like to add something for pain, suffering, and loss of wages. Is there a rule of thumb for doing so?

Thank you for your help!
