Legal Question in Civil Rights Law in Maryland

I live in Annapolis Maryland and was given a dog about 2 weeks ago. When I received the dog I was given his cage, food, and everything else he needs. The dogs owner is now asking for the dog back because they want to sell him. Am I obligated to give the dog back or how do I go about getting the papers I need from them.
