Legal Question in Employment Law in Maryland

Working on Sunday

I've recently been hired by a national pet store chain that is open 7 days aweek. I told them when I was hired that I would work some Sundays, but now realize this something I don't want to do. Can I legally refuse to work on Sunday to attend church? What are my legal rights?

Re: Working on Sunday

Your employer does not have to give you Sunday off to attend church. Neither would your employer have to give an employee who is 7th day adventist or Jewish off on Saturday to observe their sabbath.

Your best bet is to make a reasoned approach to your employer and ask if your schedule can be accomodated so that you can attend church on sunday mornings at least some of the time.

If that doesn't work, then you may need to look to move to a new employer.
