Legal Question in Family Law in Nevada

I have been married for a little over a year. My husband lost his job shortly before our marriage. He is still earning unemployment but has not taken any jobs as he is trying to build a business. The house is in his name only and has a mortgage that was taken out long before me. We have made no large purchases together and have no joint children together. If we divorce will I be required to pay him alimony? We live in Nevada and have irreconcilable differences.

Aimony, I highly doubt it. You may have an interest in his business though. My office charges $100 for consultations.

It is very unlikely that you would be required to pay alimony, especially when considering the short duration of your marriage. Will he contest the divorce? If not, you will be able to file a joint petition, meaning that you will each have some sort of say-so in the division of your assets and debt. Also, the expense associated with the divorce will be relatively cheap. If he will likely contest the divorce, you should probably seek advice from legal counsel. . .the sooner, the better, particularly because each of your paychecks until you are divorced may be argued as community property, menaing that each person generally has a right to half.
