Legal Question in Civil Litigation in New Jersey

Statute of Limitations on Property Damage

I am being sued for an accident that happened 6 1/2 years ago. The accident occured during a blizzard and involved my car ''sliding'' into the other person's car causing their taillight to break. The accident was never reported to police because the person drove away. Meanwhile, they reported it to their insurance company but I had not heard from these people until a few weeks ago regarding this. In general, my question is, what are the statutes of limitations for this person to file suit against me for the damage done to his car? I was told it was 6 years in which case the time limit has expired since they filed this suit in Aug, 2001 and the accident happened Feb. 1995
