Legal Question in Civil Litigation in New York

We are filing an appeal pro se and need an extension to file a brief. What are acceptable reasons in the state of New York for getting an extension and what is the longest time period of an extension? Thanks!

First time requests for extensions are routinely granted. It should suffice to say that additional time is needed to prepare the brief. However, you must consult the rules of the appellate court in which your appeal is pending for specifics on how to make the request (whether by letter or motion). Each department in New York has specific rules, including those governing extensions of time.
