Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in North Carolina

repossed car

My father had his car repossed and they sold the and they are saying he still owes them $11500.00. He is not able to work and pay the debt. He is on Social Security(very small income)they are willing to settle for $3500 but they will not take small payments, he does not own anything. What can they do to him if it is not paid?

Re: repossed car

They can sue him, take a judgment against him, and the judgment will stay on his record. If he gets any money or property in the future, they could potentially get to that money or property. If he has any money or property when he dies, they could potentially get to that property. Otherwise, they cannot "do" anything else except try to collect from him. They cannot garnish his social security checks.
