Legal Question in Civil Litigation in North Carolina

class action lawsuit

My mother in law worked for a textile mill in NC. The mill went out of business, the owner was embezzling money- specifically the employees insurance money. So while my mother in law thought she had insurance they didn't any of her claims as she did become very ill during this time. She became part of a class action suit and was eventually awarded $900. This nowhere covers the over $25000 in medical bills the hospital is still requiring her to pay. Question is, did she give up her rights to file another claim when she signed on to the class action suit? Even though she had paid all of her insurance premiums- she can still be held liable for all the hospital bills? Any advice in this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Re: class action lawsuit

She needs to read the documents that came with the class action lawsuit and settlement. We can't guess what they say, or what claims she resolved, but most certainly she settled some or all claims. As for her liability to the hospital, most people are liable for all medical bills they incur, whether or not an insurer is involved. The hospital would likely have no reason to base their payment and bill on what the employer did.
