Legal Question in Consumer Law in Massachusetts

Who would be financial liable for damage to a painted wall during installation of a new carpet? The independent carpet installer or the store where the carpet was purchased. The carpet installer was hired by the store. We paid the store. We did not choose or pay the installer for his work.
