can I apply for temp. disability or unemployment since the knee surgery that I have coming up this week will have me out of work for the next month or two?

Sure, you can apply for anything you like (as long as you don't falsify facts
supporting your claim) but I woudn't be overconfident regarding approval for
any of what you've mentioned.
